LPG cylinder accidental insurance claim

 LPG cylinderconsumers have accidental insurance claim option and is governed by PSU Marketing Oil Companies (IndianOil, HPCL, BPCL/BharatGas) who act as Principals and provide Third Party Insurance cover to persons and properties. The terms are documented under “Public Liability Insurance Policies for accidents involving LPG”. OMC(Oil Marketing Companies) have another Insurance Policy called “Public Liability Policy for Oil Industries”. These policies taken by Indane LPG and PSU OMCs are Public Liability Policies, hence, do not concern any individual LPG customer.

Some of the important terms of this policy are:
  • No premium for any policy is collected from the customer by the distributors.
  • The claim amount is paid over to the Oil Company who turns it to the claimant/beneficiary.
  • The policy provides for claims on account of Legal Liability
Liability at Law for compensation:

Per Event : Rs. 50 Lakhs
Per Person : Rs. 10 Lakhs
Per Year : Rs. 100 Crore

Personal Accident cover to customers and property damage at customers’ registered premises:
Personal Accident: Rs. 5 Lakhs/person per event in case of death
Medical Expenses: Rs. 15 Lakhs/event (max Rs. 1 Lakh/person, immediate relief Rs. 25K/person)
Property Damage : Rs. 1 Lakh/event at authorized customers’ registered premises.
Per Year in aggregate: Rs. 8 Crore

NOTE:  A slight different monetary cover is provided by Indane LPG:

Personal Accident: Rs. 6 Lakhs/person per event in case of death
Medical Expenses: Rs. 30 Lakhs/event (max Rs. 2 Lakh/person, immediate relief Rs. 25K/person)
Property Damage : Rs. 1 Lakh/event at authorized customers’ registered premises.
Per Year in aggregate: Rs. 10 Crore

The Procedure to be followed by customers:
  • In case of an accident involving consumer’s installation, the supply distributor is advised on it.
  • When an accident is reported, the concerned Area Office investigates the cause of the accident. If the cause is found out to be of an LPG, the Area Office notifies the concerned Insurance Company and lodges claim with it.
  • Customers need not apply to the Insurance Company or directly contact them.
  • Customers are required to submit the original documents of these:
      1.  In case of Death: Death Certificate(s) and Post Mortem report(s)/Coroner’s    report/Inquest          report (whichever applicable).
      2.  In case of injuries: Medical Bills, Doctor’s Prescriptions, Discharge Card and any other     documents related to hospitalization of the victim.
  • In case of property damage, the Insurance Company sends its own Supervisor to assess the loss.
  • Claims are settled by the concerned Insurance Company based upon the merit of each case. Decisions are taken regarding the settlement of the claim as per provisioned by the Insurance Policies.
These terms are universal for all the Oil companies providing an LPG connection in India. Except for a few differences in the monetary cover of various companies, the terms and conditions of governance are one and the same for all companies.
